Open enrollment hurts some schools in funding

The Barrington family lives on the outskirts of Millville, technically in the Talawanda City School District, but not far from the borders of Ross and Hamilton schools.

Although mom Rachel Barrington teaches English as a Second Language in Talawanda, she takes her daughter Grace to a Hamilton elementary every day, taking advantage of Ohio’s open enrollment.

“We’ve always just been more involved in the Hamilton community,” Barrington said. “So when Hamilton started offering open enrollment five years ago, we moved over.” The other Barrington daughter, Claire, went to Monroe Elementary prior to the opening of Ridgeway and stayed in Hamilton schools up through the seventh grade, but now a freshman, she does her school work through the on-line Ohio Virtual Academy.

The complex landscape of Ohio charter schools

Northeast Ohio has a big chunk of the so-called “bricks and mortar” charter schools, with just over 100 in the seven-county region. Cuyahoga County has 73 of them.

But many local charter students are among the more than 30,000 statewide who attend school by computer through the major online charters — Alternative Education Academy (also known as OHDELA), Buckeye Online School for Success, Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow, Ohio Connections Academy, Ohio Virtual Academy, Treca Digital Academy and Virtual Community School of Ohio.

Some districts have set up their own charter schools, which can operate online, such as in Akron and Lorain, or in classrooms, such as in Lakewood.

Summer School Week: Classes with ‘Virtually’ No School

Julia took the class through Connections Academy to get ahead in school.

She believes being self-motivated is a must.

“You have to force yourself to sit down, and do the work on your own and set dates and time yourself and limit yourself, and plan.”

Parents are encouraged to help; however, Jill believes the student can handle the class on their own, especially because she says teachers are so easily accessible.

Connections Academy is just one accredited school that offers courses. Ohio Virtual Academy is another.

Online credit recovery is something that is being done in school now.

Perspectives: Online e-schools offer an alternative to traditional education

Last school year was not a good one for Noah Geogerian.

As a student enrolled in Marietta City Schools, Geogerian, 14, struggled with his grades, had difficulty focusing on his school work and got himself into a lot of trouble at school.

His parents, Daniel and Emily Geogerian, decided to enroll him in the Ohio Virtual Academy, an online school, for the first time this school year, and so far, things are going well.

“He’s a really bright kid but just gets distracted easily, and so the home environment … it’s just different from his peer setting where he’s distracted and wanting to make poor choices and say things to make people laugh, so it’s been a good fit for him this year,” Emily Geogerian said.

Noah’s not alone. According to data from the Ohio Department of Education, as of June 2010, there were almost 30,000 Ohio students enrolled in e-schools full-time.

During the 2009-10 school year, there were 27 e-schools in operation in Ohio, seven of which have statewide enrollment and the remainder of which limit enrollment to their district or region.

Along with Noah, who is currently in the eighth grade, his sister, Brianna, 15, a sophomore, is enrolled in the Ohio Virtual Academy for the first time this school year.

Olentangy launches in-district alternative

LEWIS CENTER, Ohio – Looking to save money while holding onto students, the Olentangy school district has created its own alternative program.

Last year, 74 of Olentangy’s more than 15,000 students attended some sort of online community school program, costing the district more than $400,000 in state aid. Nearly half went to Ohio Virtual Academy, with other students leaving the district for other online-education programs, such as Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow.
