Stone graduates from Digital Academy

LANCASTER — The most recent graduate of the Lancaster Digital Academy is Mona Jean Melissa Michelle (Perry) Stone. Stone is the daughter of Mona and Herbert Stone of Lancaster. Her future plans securing employment, and then exploring the medical field.

Marion Rushmore Academy sees big growth in 2nd year

Rushmore Academy, currently in its second year, is in the former Colonial Acres Elementary School at 565 Amherst Drive. Its students include teens struggling in traditional schools and dropouts who want another try at a high school diploma.

Work consists of classroom instruction and online lessons. Students can get more one-on-one attention than in traditional schools. They can work at their own pace and, when possible, set their own hours.

For Braddy it’s a way to go to school and work at the same time. Rushmore director Frank Volenik said that out of his current 113 students, 16 work almost 40 hours a week and more than 50 who employed.

Ohio should focus on online learning, not more snow days

Mississinawa Valley School District in Darke County is experimenting with online learning for those pesky snow days. When school is called off in the rural county, students can log in to get the day’s lesson. Students then have two weeks to complete the assignments, which allows for those students who may not have computers or internet access at home.

In this age of increasing technological advances, with more colleges providing online learning and businesses demanding a tech-savvy workforce, the approach not only provides students with their day’s learning but also teaches them invaluable online skills as well as the discipline to learn on their own.

It’s a win-win for students and the state.

Instead of two more snow days when the only learning our students do is how to build a snowman at a cost to Ohio taxpayers, this approach promises to have long-term benefits, and solutions such as these are where our next governor should be looking.

This is a leap for technology. Online learning is something students in college see happening more and more. In fact with some college offerings, a student might be able to learn all via online learning and never step foot in a classroom. In the future, this might be the same for kids at the lower levels as well. It might not happen in five to ten years, but it will happen. Technology keeps changing and evolving making things such as this even possible. About ten years ago, online learning and using the internet like this was almost unheard of, but now there are entire degrees that can be earned through online learning.

Some snowed-in Ohio students to learn online

When bad weather hits this winter, students in a rural western Ohio school district will hit their home computers as part of an experiment.

With the Ohio Department of Education looking on, the Mississinawa Valley Schools in Darke County will try to replace days off for snow and other inclement weather with online learning.

Graduation rates on the rise

One big impact on the rate is students who transfer into the district already lacking credits, which is why he said the district puts a big focus on after-school and summer school programs.

“We’re very aware of our graduation rate and work really hard to improve it,” Raach said.

Online and after-school programs are offered for students at River View High School.

“We try to provide kids every opportunity to make sure they get their credits, ultimately, they have some responsibility, but we do provide those opportunities to kids,” Kanuckel said.

Coshocton High School also offers online learning and Hire said a lot of flexibility is offered for credits to provide more opportunity to succeed.

“Also a big thank you to the Care Team approach, where local agencies work with some of our students that are highly at-risk so we can meet all of their needs,” Hire said. “It’s everybody coming together for after school programs, programs in the school day and other ways to help students get their diplomas.”

He said despite how successful a 96 percent rate is, there’s still 4 percent that should have passed.

“We really can’t rest until we get a 100 percent graduation rate,” Hire said.
