Linik earns teaching award

COLUMBUS – Virtual Community School of Ohio (VCS Ohio) teacher Gabriela Linik of Orient received the “Teacher of the Quarter” award at a recent professional development event.

Linik was chosen by the management team for her persistence in promoting and exposing students to foreign language. She is highly involved with the Ohio Foreign Language Association. She also hosted the first-ever VCS student teacher.

The complex landscape of Ohio charter schools

Northeast Ohio has a big chunk of the so-called “bricks and mortar” charter schools, with just over 100 in the seven-county region. Cuyahoga County has 73 of them.

But many local charter students are among the more than 30,000 statewide who attend school by computer through the major online charters — Alternative Education Academy (also known as OHDELA), Buckeye Online School for Success, Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow, Ohio Connections Academy, Ohio Virtual Academy, Treca Digital Academy and Virtual Community School of Ohio.

Some districts have set up their own charter schools, which can operate online, such as in Akron and Lorain, or in classrooms, such as in Lakewood.

Local students named to honor roll at online school

COLUMBUS — Virtual Community School of Ohio recently named eastern Ohio students to the honor roll for the second semester of the 2010-11 school year. Students were selected based on stringent criteria for their grade level.

The following students have been named to the second-semester honor roll:

Zanesville — Anthony Daniels, sophomore.

School funding ‘gloom and doom’

Regarding personnel, the board advanced special education instructor Tasha Jamison on the salary schedule due to proof of years of service, retroactive to Oct. 11. It also approved Debra Burden as a van driver for the Fredericktown Local School district and added to both the substitute teacher and substitute teacher aide lists.

Following a discussion, the board approved an agreement with Virtual Community School for online instruction. Superintendent Timm Mackley said the online option will be used for students at the Alternative Center and could also be used by the other local school districts for students who need to make up credits or for flex-credit classes.

Local teacher receives Education Award

COLUMBUS– Virtual Community School of Ohio (VCS Ohio) teacher Bryn Stepp of Jackson received the “Best Practices Award” at the 2010 VCS Ohio Opening Day ceremony at the Wedgewood Country Club in Powell. Stepp was selected by the management team for her highly innovative approach to learning as well as her leadership skills and her close contact with students and parents. She teaches sixth grade language arts and social studies and has been with VCS for eight years.

LOCAL STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM ONLINE HIGH SCHOOL

COLUMBUS — The Virtual Community School of Ohio recently honored the Class of 2010 at a graduation ceremony at the Bridgewater Banquet and Conference Center in Powell. This year’s 114 high school graduates make up the eighth graduating class since VCS Ohio’s inception.
