Monroe board weighs fate of 2 former schools

The schools were both closed in 2009 due to a district consolidation. If Christiancy is reopened, it will become the new home of the district’s Virtual High School program.

The board meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the Monroe Public School’s administration building, but due to other agenda items, discussion about the schools is not expected to take place until 7:30 p.m., at the earliest.

“Many schools facing budget cuts have had to cancel low enrollment courses over the last few years,” said Liz Pape, president and CEO of Virtual High School. “By partnering with VHS, they are now able to continue to provide the courses that students need and want while equipping them with critical skills that will be invaluable in their next level of education or careers.”
The nonprofit has 770 member schools in total across the globe.

Gnosis insists it’s not affiliated with Anonymous, but told Mediaite that Gawker’s challenges aimed at 4chan made Gawker seem too ”arrogant”:

”I mean if you say things like that, and attack sites like 4chan (which we are not affiliated to), you must at least have the means to back yourself up. We considered what action we would take, and decided that the Gawkmedia ‘empire’ needs to be brought down a peg or two. Our group’s mission? We don’t have one.”

Yeah, it all sounds like some kind of digital food fight in a virtual high school cafeteria. Unfortunately, in all this silliness, your life online could be collateral damage.

Now the district makes all eighth-graders attend summer “bridge” programs – a week or two at their future high schools to get to know teachers, take tests in math and reading, and learn how to study and manage time.

Once in high school, CPS offers students online courses to help them keep up on their credits. About 20 percent of CPS students take at least one online course, Rothwell estimated, not counting the 250 or so who attend CPS’ Virtual High School.

Most area high schools have expanded online course offerings to help students make up missed credits and graduate on time.

New Richmond schools runs a Graduation Academy at its district office, helping about 20 students a year make up credits online. The district’s grad rate climbed from 89.9 percent to a record 94 percent over the past two years, school officials said.
